Last summer, I embarked on an unforgettable two and a half-week adventure with fellow Texas Tech Honors students, walking the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. This journey wasn’t just about hiking; it was about discovering what true leadership means. Under the guidance of Professor Kurt Caswell, this Honors Summit Experience opened my eyes to the real essence of leadership, collaboration, and self-discovery in ways no classroom ever could.

Leadership Isn’t Just About Being in Charge

Throughout our journey, we took turns being group leaders, which meant navigating challenging terrains, making joint decisions, and adapting to unexpected situations. I learned that leadership goes beyond just issuing orders; it requires understanding the group dynamic, maintaining composure, and actively listening. For example, during a particularly steep ascent, one team member suggested an alternate route that avoided strenuous climbing. This adaptability showcased our diverse skills and perspectives, emphasizing the vital role of emotional intelligence in effective leadership.

Leadership evolved into a shared responsibility, where every team member's voice contributed to our success.

Honest Feedback Builds Stronger Teams

Each evening, we engaged in reflective peer feedback sessions. Initially, these moments felt awkward, but soon they became a powerful tool for personal growth. One time, a teammate pointed out how my decision-making felt rushed in challenging moments. This honest insight prompted me to slow down and consider everyone's input before making choices. This culture of constructive critique fostered trust and openness, enhancing our overall performance.

Feedback acted as our third eye, illuminating the blind spots we may have missed and enriching our group dynamics significantly.

Writing in Nature Changed the Way I Reflect

Equipped with notebooks, we held writing workshops on the trail. The combination of walking and being surrounded by nature significantly deepened my reflections. The soothing sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves offered the perfect soundtrack for contemplation. I noticed that I was more open to my thoughts during these writing sessions. Even today, I consult that journal when faced with significant decisions, drawing on the clarity and perspective it provides.

Writing amid stunning landscapes transformed personal reflection into a valued practice I cherish.

Culture, Nature & History Deepen Perspective

The Camino is not just a trail; it is rich with history, culture, and natural beauty. From quaint medieval villages to ancient pilgrim routes, we immersed ourselves in the stories that have shaped northern Spain. For instance, in the village of Astorga, we investigated the town's Roman roots, where historical architecture dates back over 2,000 years. Learning about the flora and fauna, geology, and historical narratives deepened my appreciation for how our environment influences our journey.

Understanding our surroundings transformed our hike into a quest for connection, linking our experiences to centuries of tradition.

Balance Between Solitude and Community

The long walking days provided quiet moments for introspection, while shared meals and laughter highlighted the significance of building community. This balance is now integral to my approach to leadership and collaboration. I recognized that while solitude can cultivate creativity, community ignites inspiration. During our evenings together, exchanging stories over shared meals enriched our bond, reminding me that both individual reflection and collective experiences shape successful teamwork.

This blend of personal and communal experiences intricately intertwined, each enhancing the other beautifully.

Embracing the Journey of Leadership

Walking the Camino de Santiago was more than just a physical challenge; it was a profound journey of leadership and personal growth. The lessons I learned amid the stunning scenery and rich culture of northern Spain continue to shape me. They remind me that true leadership relies on understanding, collaboration, and openness.

As we navigate both our professional and personal lives, these insights guide us to become better leaders and teammates. The Camino stands as a testament to the power of shared experiences and self-discovery, serving as a beautiful reminder that every step we take contributes to our journey of growth.
